For being the first ever time-traveller–as far as I know–there is one aspect of time that still baffles me. How a period of time can simultaneously last forever, and fly by. This summer did just that. Between working, and trying to find time to study and figure out all the components I’ll need for the tachyon containment field, time proceeded rapidly. When it came to the amount of time that I was spending away from Melanie, and not being able to go see my Grandmother, it seemed to crawl along at an excruciating pace. Elliot was the only buffer, he was the only constant face, the only person I was talking to, and when you’re not getting any talking back, it can drive you a bit nutty.

The good news is that Melanie is moving up in a couple of weeks. Elliot and I are going to fly down to Florida and drive back with her, take a few days doing it. Her car is a 78 Honda Accord Hatchback, she’s having a tow hitch welded on, and we’re going to bring one of the small Uhaul trailers up with us.

Another thing that has been messing with my sense of time is the letters from my mystery traveller. I’ve received two in the past month.

Sam Beckett,

Sorry for the long gap of silence. Just so you know, I have my own project that I’m working on back here. It’s pretty important to me, but it’s important for you as well.

How are Melanie and Elliot doing?

I know you’re probably worried about getting all the components that you’ll need to build the machine, but you can relax. I’ll help you after I finish my project. But you need to be patient. I suspect this is going to take me a couple of years.

Your friend in time,

The Doctor

The cryptic nature of his letters no longer frustrated me. I was helpless to figure it out, so I just let it be. I didn’t respond. Why respond?

Number Five,

Are you ok? I didn’t get a response from you. I hope it’s not because you’re mad. You have to understand that there is a reason I’m doing things the way that I am. It’s lonely and isolated on my end as well, but I have to do it this way, for a purpose.

Unlike you, I don’t have a Melanie, and I don’t have a grandmother. Ok?

Anyway, one of the components that you’re going to need, will be invented in 1992. It’s the alloy coil that will collect the tachyons. So, you can’t do much about that right now. So please don’t worry about it.

I just wanted to give you a little breadcrumb.

Patiently,

Mick Rory

His time travel references are getting more obscure, because I don’t know who Number Five or Mick Rory are. I went to the library and tried to look, but I didn’t find anything. I wish I had Google access. It would have been nice to find a solution to that little problem, something that could pull information from my original time while I’m back here.

Not only would I get these references, but I could also Google Judy’s case, and figure out how to get her out.

The second letter frustrated me, so I did respond.

Mick Rory?

Sorry, I don’t get the reference on that. Or the Number Five one.

I’ve got to be honest, I’m kind of irritated. I’d prefer if you only write to me when you have something to contribute. The alloy coil is a good start, and I do understand that you think there is some reason you can’t tell me more, but then just leave me alone until you can. Ok?
